In architecture we get to learn a little bit about everything. It’s more than just designing buildings; it’s also about connecting with people, finding solutions to problems, to be creative but practical at the same time. The ALVA campus has a real sense of community among students and staff. In my time here, I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved in designing and constructing a timber bus stop located on campus. The pride and satisfaction of seeing my idea turn into a real physical manifestation and being used by the public was incredible. Through the ALVA Society I’ve had the opportunity to attend national competitions such as SuperStudio 2014, where my team placed 3rd nationwide. I will have the opportunity to travel with classmates to do a studio in Barcelona in 2015. The work experience requirement has allowed me to work directly under experienced architects and gain invaluable skills and insight into the profession. It’s been an immensely rewarding experience.
