Conduct survey work to analyse the likely behaviour of soil and rock placed under pressure by proposed structures which can have above and below ground foundations.
Roles and responsibilities
- obtain soil and rock samples at different depths across sites
- test samples to determine their strength, compressibility and other factors that affect the behaviour of soil and rock when a structure is built on top of it
- determine the safe loading level for the soil
- assess and monitor any risks posed by site conditions
Geotechnical engineers are often employed in the construction or mining industries.
