Roles and responsibilities

Visual arts and crafts professionals:

  • conceive and develop ideas for artistic presentation, and select and arrange their subject
  • select artistic medium, method and materials and prepare materials
  • paint and draw or sculpt stone, wood, clay, wax or other material into desired shape
  • use photography, modelling, film-making, music, acting, dancing, video and computers to communicate an impression or idea

Artists are generally self-employed and work in studios either alone, or share space with other artists. They may also be commissioned or employed as designers or performers for a variety of organisations such as marketing and advertising agencies, film or theatre companies and galleries.
