English competency

English is the language of instruction and assessment at UWA and you will need to meet the English language requirements of the University to be eligible for a place.

Many of the world's major problems and areas of cutting-edge research are multidisciplinary and this course enables you to draw on a broad range of postgraduate units offered by different schools and faculties across the University.

About the course

The course provides you with the opportunity to select a unique combination of postgraduate units to achieve your academic, professional and/or personal goals. You are able to enrol in a broad range of postgraduate units offered by different schools and faculties across the University, dependant on your previous study and professional experience. After completing four units (24 points) across the disciplines, you then nominate an area in which you would like to gain a depth of knowledge, in which you take a minimum of four units (24 points). These may include a substantial research-based project, capstone experience and/or piece of scholarship.

Elective
In consultation with the course adviser, students will initially complete 24 points (4 units) of breadth from elective units available in all faculties. At the completion of the first 24 points (4 units) of the course, each student will be required to nominate their area of disciplinary or cross-disciplinary depth within which they will take a minimum of 24 points (4 units) including units that enable them to to plan, and execute a substantial research-based project, capstone experience and/or piece of scholarship. Remaining units will be selected in consultation with the course adviser as electives to complement and inform study in the area of disciplinary or cross-disciplinary depth. A minimum of 50 per cent of units must be studied at Level 4 or 5. The interdisciplinary service learning SVLG5003 Wicked Problems is highly recommended for all Master of Studies students.

UWA was the only university to offer a course that allowed me to study both Policy and Education within one Masters course. I chose a Master of Studies as it gave me the flexibility to study across disciplines I believe that in this complex world the kind of thinking that will be needed to solve problems will be interdisciplinary and I love that my course sets me up for this kind of world. In my course I can study both a breath of units relating to Public Policy whilst still focusing on my passion, Education.

I have loved the class discussions in our seminars - I really feel academically engaged in the learning process. The lecturers are so knowledgeable and also the mix of world and life experience of my classmates has created a real depth of analysis and discussion.
