Entry standards

Find out about the admission pathways to studying with us at UWA.

The University of Western Australia believes transparent, easily understood and readily available information for students, families and schools on admission to higher education is a key responsibility for all providers.

We hope this information is useful and it assists you to choose the right university, and the right degree, for you.

Applying to UWA

Applicants wishing to commence an undergraduate degree at UWA must satisfy the University’s academic and English language competence (ELC) requirements to be eligible for a place within the course. Applicants only need to satisfy one of the below academic requirements to be eligible.

UWA also offers a number of Assured Pathways giving successful applicants an assured place into one of our professional postgraduate courses. Entry into an Assured Pathway requires a higher ATAR than the minimum for entry into an undergraduate course and is generally only available to current school-leaving applicants.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students

UWA’s School of Indigenous Studies provides a number of offerings, from pathway and diploma courses for Indigenous students, to undergraduate and master’s degrees offered to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. Further information on courses, as well as the support provided, is available at the School of Indigenous Studies.

Overseas secondary qualifications

UWA accepts a number of overseas secondary education qualifications as satisfying the entry requirements to UWA degrees. For a full list of acceptable qualifications and the required standards, refer to UWA's Admission Coursework Policy, Appendix Schedule B.

Applicants with recent secondary education (within the past two years)

Australian Year 12 students

To be eligible for UWA’s undergraduate degrees based on previous or current Australian Year 12 studies, applicants must have completed the relevant state Certificate of Education and achieved an Australian Tertiary Aggregate Rank (ATAR) of 75 or above. Applicants must also provide evidence of satisfying UWA’s ELC requirements.

Applicants completing the International Baccalaureate (IB) are required to successfully complete the diploma program. To be eligible for UWA’s undergraduate degrees, IB graduates will require a minimum score of 24 or higher (this may vary depending on the level of mathematics undertaken). Applicants must also provide evidence of satisfying UWA’s ELC requirements. View further information on satisfying UWA’s entry requirements for IB graduates.

Applicants sitting Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) or International Baccalaureate in Western Australia can apply for an Early Offer and be admitted based on predicted ATAR or IB score. Predicted ATARs are determined by the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre, Western Australia (TISC) based on Year 11 or Year 12 results. Applicants are still required to achieve WACE and complete four ATAR subjects as well as provide evidence of satisfying UWA’s ELC requirements.

ATAR adjustments

UWA has a number of equity pathways that grant applicants an adjustment to their ATAR. When an adjustment is made to an applicant’s ATAR, this will be referred to as a Selection Rank.

Broadway — Applicants will automatically have an adjustment made to their ATAR if they have completed the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) ATAR examinations at a UWA Broadway-identified school and achieved an ATAR of 75 or above. Broadway schools are those located in the Perth metropolitan area and have a three-year ICSEA (Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage) average score at or below the Western Australian median, or are a school located in regional or remote Western Australia. View further information on ATAR adjustments and the list of Broadway schools available.

Fairway — Fairway is a comprehensive program providing academic, financial and personal support for students completing Year 12 under challenging circumstances. The program is responsive to individual student needs throughout their final year of secondary school and during their university studies. Students completing the Fairway program need to obtain an ATAR of 70 to be eligible to enter one of UWA’s undergraduate degrees.

First in Family — Applicants with parents or guardians have not completed a university-level degree, may be eligible for a place at UWA through the First in Family program. Applicants must achieve an ATAR of 70 or above and satisfy UWA’s ELC requirements.

UWay — UWay is for applicants who believe their preparation to commence studies at UWA has been adversely affected. Depending on the circumstances and the evidence provided, UWA may adjust an applicant’s ATAR. Once an adjustment is made, the applicant may become eligible to UWA’s undergraduate degrees.

ATAR plus additional criteria — Some of UWA’s Professional Pathway courses require additional criteria for entry. These include Medicine and Dentistry, which require the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT ANZ) and an interview, as well as a sufficiently high ATAR. Dentistry also requires the completion of a Spatial Awareness Test. View further information regarding these entry requirements. Music Specialist Studies requires applicants to audition, as well as achieve an ATAR of 75 or higher.

Applicants with Higher Education Study

To be eligible for UWA’s undergraduate degrees based on previous higher education studies, applicants must have completed one full-time semester or the equivalent of studies at an Australian university and at the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 7 or higher; and have achieved a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 (7) or above. Applicants must also provide evidence of satisfying UWA’s ELC requirements. Applicants who have completed one full-time year or the equivalent of studies at the AQF Level 7 or higher, within the previous two years of application, and achieved a GPA of 4.0 (7) or above are not required to provide separate evidence of ELC to be eligible.

Applicants who have completed a Level 5 or a Level 6 AQF qualification with a full-time duration of 12 months or more and completed within two years prior to commencement at the University are not required to provide separate evidence of ELC. All other applicants must provide evidence of satisfying UWA's ELC requirements.
